On Saturday 18 August Radley AC hosted the final fixture of the Southern Athletics league of 2018.
The shortage of athletes did not deter the team’s spirit and they were ready to take on the mighty Woking AC who were heading the Division undefeated during 2018. Despite a few gaps in the team, the Radley athletes battled for every pb, sb and point but were unable to overhaul the Division winners, losing by just 10 points.
The outstanding performances of the day came from sprinter Eima Mead who clocked a pb of 10.72 for his 100m win and also came 2nd in the 200m. He also ran a great leg in the 4 x 100m relay that won the race by just 2/100th of a second from an impressive Portsmouth spring team.
In the field England International Kathryn Woodcock won the hammer in a new pb (45.17) and then won her preferred event the Discus with 44.89m. Both Kathryn and Eima were awarded athlete of the match. Alex Miell-ingram gained a second place in a hard fought 5K then followed that up with an impressively timed win the 1500m – kicking on the last lap to outsprint the opposition. Blake Strickland Bennett jumped lots of barriers to amass lots of points for the team – 400H, 100H, HJ and Steeplechase.
Tara Kafke and training partner Emma Haley also had good days with double wins.Tara in the 800m and 200m and Emma in the 800m and 1500m. Both were also part of the relay squads. Islay Thorne had a busy day amassing great points from her events 1st in 400H, 2nd in 400m and 100mH and assisted both relays.
Overall an excellent team effort and this result should at least secure Radley’s place near the top of Division 2.
