Radley AC made the long trip to Peterborough for their first SAL fixture of 2016 having returning to the top division (Div 1) this year.
The fixture was always going to be a tough one with the overall league winners at home (Nene Valley) as well as Colchester who finished 5th last year, whilst the other team (Harrow) was promoted along with Radley but as winners of Div 2W last year.
Radley rallied around to put a team together despite exams and injuries taking its toll and the efforts of the athletes that were there paid off.
Personal bests were achieved by U20 Alex Miell-Ingram in the 5K knocking 19s off his previous best to clock 16.53.3, Alex’s coach and team mate Mick Cottam also clocked a pb in 19.43.7. Harry New (still U17) got a 400H pb (over the higher height) in 60.7. Alice Hopkins (U20) had a great day achieving 2 pbs in 100m (12.9) and 100H (14.3), the latter achieving her the man of the match award. Faith Brew (U20) clocked an impressive 60.7 for a 400m pb and Luisa Chantler-Edmonds (U20) in the discus (43.90).
Other great performances came from David Gain who got a sprint double (10.9 and 22.0) and also assisted the relay to a win (43.0).
The team had many senior league debutants who performed at the more senior level admirably.
The team managed to achieve an impressive 2nd place behind hosts Nene Valley as follows:
NVH - 215.5
Radley - 178
Harrow - 157.5
Colchester - 154
Overall a great day of athletics and a superb team effort – rewarded by the 2nd place.
